TANK PLACEMENT & INSTALLATION

Site Preparation and Installation

Every site has its own unique considerations, so it is best to discuss your specific needs with our experienced staff. Depending upon your specific site and needs, we may recommend a complimentary site check prior to scheduling your installation.

With that understanding, there are a few things that are universal, so we've created this checklist as a starting point for your consideration.

Collett Propane Tanks

Plumbing

Gas line coming out of house (or structure where propane will be used) MUST BE

  • Installed before Collett arrives to install tank.
  • A minimum of 5 feet from any outdoor electricity (including service panels, heat pumps / HVAC units, outdoor electrical outlets or outdoor lighting)
  • A minimum of 3 feet from any window or door opening

Locating Above Ground 125 Gallon Tanks

  • Greene County residents (only) are required to have a permit for propane tank installation. If you need help, Collett can assist you in the permitting process.
  • The tank CAN sit against the home or structure, however;
    • It must be a minimum of 10 feet from any outdoor electricity (including service panels, heat pumps / HVAC units, outdoor electrical outlets or outdoor lighting)
    • It must be a minimum of 3 feet from any window or door opening
  • All tanks (above or below ground) must be located within 100' of a driveway that is clear of obstructions and readily accessible for a propane delivery truck which is 12 wide X 14 high. We cannot deliver propane from any roadway.

Collett Propane Tank Installation

Locating 250 – 1,000 Gallon Tanks

  • All Customer must call "OOPS" (1-800-362-2764) at least 72 hours in advance and have all utility lines marked prior to arrival of Collett installation crew.
  • Greene County residents (only) are required to have a permit for propane tank installation. If you need help, Collett can assist you in the permitting process.
  • All tanks (above or below ground) must be located within 100' of a driveway that is clear of obstructions and readily accessible for a propane delivery truck which is 12 wide X 14 high. We cannot deliver propane from any roadway.
  • Distance from structures
    • Underground Tanks – If your tank will be installed underground, it must be at least 15 feet from any insured structure, but 20 – 30 feet is recommended. This usually includes all detached garages, sheds, barns, warehouses or other out-buildings.
    • Above-Ground Tanks – For an above-ground tank, it must be a minimum of 10 feet from these same insured structures.

Underground Tank Placements

There is one other consideration that only applies to underground tank placements. You will need to have a plan for where you want excess soil placed after installation, or we can haul it away for a fee.

Planning the Long-Term

  • You cannot enclose a propane tank within any kind of structure.
  • Many choose to use landscaping in place of an enclosure, just remember to leave a clear path to your tank for deliveries and any maintenance (it’s not a frequent occurrence, but you shouldn’t be surprised when it does happen).
  • Have your lines marked. If you do any digging between the tank and the structure, make sure you contact Collett to have your gas lines marked in advance (for a minimal fee). After the first winter in a house, the installation path becomes a distant memory and hitting those lines with your shovel can potentially become an expensive reminder.
  • If you want to clean your above-ground tank, power-washing is fine. Collett-owned tanks should not be painted.
  • We recommend against placing the tank in a high traffic area.

For more specific information, see our Tank Installation Requirements & New Account Information sheet. We recommend reviewing this sheet with your Collett customer service representative as you plan for your installation.

When in doubt, contact your local office. We offer complimentary site checks for your peace of mind and ours. We would be happy to review any concerns with you to make sure your installation goes smoothly.
