About Collett Propane

COLLETT AT A GLANCE

About Collett Propane

Collett Propane is a family-owned-and-operated third-generation small business. We got our start as a hardware store in 1919 and expanded into propane, by chance, in 1952.

For three generations, Collett Propane has been serving and caring for our outstanding and dedicated employees, loyal customers, and the communities we serve, which we are proud to call home. We continue to build the future of our company by honoring our past and staying true to values and faith of our founders – Don & Virginia Collett and Jane Collett (Newton.)

Our History

1919

The Early Years

The family first started serving the community in the form of a hardware store in New Burlington in 1919 when Bob Collett first opened Collett Hardware after returning from service in World War I. The central location between Xenia and Wilmington combined with Bob's dedication to customer service proved to be a winning combination. The store changed hands briefly and the name was changed before Bob’s sons, Don & Chuck were able to re-establish Collett Hardware on the same site.

Expanding Business

The central location of the New Burlington store attracted a traveling salesman who approached the brothers about expanding into the Propane business and Collett Propane was born in 1952. The demand for propane grew through the 60’s and into the 70’s as propane replaced coal and fuel oil for home heating. It also gained great popularity for drying grain on farms.

1972

Relocating

In the early 1970s, the Army Corp of Engineers took control of New Burlington to create what is today, Caesar Creek Lake. New Burlington was a much-loved, tight-knit community and no one really wanted to move, but given no other options, Don found a way to make it a positive change for the company. The new location in Wilmington, Ohio enabled expansion of the product offering within the hardware store and an expanded service footprint for the propane business.

Growing

In 1982, Jane Collett (Newton), Don's daughter joined the company after earning a business degree from Wright State University. Four years later, a second Collett Propane depot and office was established in the Xenia Industrial Park to improve distribution and further expand the service footprint.

In 2005, the third Collett Propane office opened just north of Mason in Lebanon, Ohio, continuing that growth pattern.
